Background of the Study
Production capacity planning is a critical aspect of manufacturing management that directly influences a company's ability to meet market demand efficiently while maintaining profitability. In the FMCG sector, where Nestlé Nigeria operates, effective production capacity planning ensures the smooth flow of goods through the supply chain and helps mitigate operational disruptions. In Niger State, Nestlé faces unique challenges due to infrastructure limitations, fluctuating raw material availability, and the need to align production with regional demand. As a result, production capacity planning plays a vital role in ensuring that the company can scale production to meet market needs without overburdening resources, leading to business sustainability (Adeleke & Osagie, 2023).
For Nestlé Nigeria, the need for robust production capacity planning is magnified by its large-scale operations and the growing demand for food and beverage products. The company must ensure that production facilities are operating at optimal levels to meet demand forecasts while considering factors such as labor productivity, machine capacity, and energy costs. As production decisions affect both short-term and long-term business sustainability, improper capacity planning can lead to inefficiencies, increased costs, and even stockouts, undermining business continuity (Okafor & Alabi, 2024).
The importance of effective production capacity planning for business sustainability has been widely acknowledged in supply chain management literature. However, the specific application of production capacity planning practices in Nestlé Nigeria, particularly in Niger State, has not been extensively studied. This study aims to examine the relationship between production capacity planning and business sustainability, with a focus on how Nestlé Nigeria manages capacity to sustain its operations and meet market demands in this region.
Statement of the Problem
In the context of Nestlé Nigeria's operations in Niger State, inefficient production capacity planning can result in an inability to meet consumer demand in a timely manner, leading to production bottlenecks, excessive lead times, and missed opportunities in the market. Despite Nestlé’s investments in advanced production technologies, there is limited understanding of how the company's production capacity planning strategies contribute to its long-term business sustainability, particularly in the face of regional challenges such as infrastructure gaps and fluctuating demand patterns.
The central issue that this study seeks to address is whether the production capacity planning strategies employed by Nestlé Nigeria in Niger State effectively support its goal of business sustainability. A failure to optimize production capacity could have adverse effects on the company’s ability to maintain profitability, meet customer demands, and navigate market fluctuations. Therefore, it is essential to assess how well the company’s production planning methods align with business sustainability objectives.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the production capacity planning strategies employed by Nestlé Nigeria in Niger State.
2. To examine the effect of production capacity planning on the long-term business sustainability of Nestlé Nigeria.
3. To identify the challenges that Nestlé Nigeria faces in aligning production capacity planning with its business sustainability goals in Niger State.
Research Questions
1. What production capacity planning strategies does Nestlé Nigeria employ in its Niger State operations?
2. How does production capacity planning influence the long-term sustainability of Nestlé Nigeria's operations?
3. What challenges does Nestlé Nigeria face in aligning its production capacity planning with sustainability goals in Niger State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is no significant relationship between production capacity planning and business sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria in Niger State.
2. Effective production capacity planning positively influences business sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria in Niger State.
3. Challenges in production capacity planning significantly hinder the achievement of business sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on production capacity planning within Nestlé Nigeria’s operations in Niger State and examines its impact on the company’s business sustainability. The research does not explore the company’s broader operations in other states, limiting the generalizability of the findings. Data will be collected from interviews with Nestlé Nigeria’s production and supply chain managers, as well as secondary data from internal reports. The study’s limitations include potential access restrictions to sensitive company data, which may affect the depth of analysis.
